Wayside Shrine consists of three stages. In
the first instance, a tourist brochure will be distributed to
all major Leeds city centre venues advertising virtual wayside
shrines along the M62; placed by Audiences Yorkshire at all
their tourist stands. This stage is complete; the brochures
are printed and awaiting distribution as part of the Situation
Leeds Art in the Public Realm Festival in May 2005.
The second stage of the project will involve a show of actual
shrines, one at each of the service stations along the M62 in
August 2005. They will be placed in the grounds of each service
station and will be based on drawings of the motorway. The shrines
will be constructed using traditional methods (wood framing
and metal casting) and have been made in collaboration with
Leeds College of Art and Design as part of the national AA2A
(Artists’ Access to Art College) project.
For the final stage, a video will be made showing a car journey
from Hull to Liverpool, and vice versa, from the passenger’s
point of view; stopping at each service station to view the
shrines. The video will then be speeded up for the travelling
footage and slowed down for the period of viewing each shrine,
with the final video being displayed in a gallery environment.
The final video showing is envisaged as a split screen presentation,
showing the journey East to West on one side and West to East
on the other side of the screen. The intention is for this stage
of the project to be a gallery piece.
This project is sponsored by the Arts Council and Christian
Arts Trust and supported by Moto.
